Everybody knows that when a plane crashes it is the black box that is turned to. What is less commonly known is that a black box exists in most cars on the road today.
This technology does not record voices, as on aircraft, but it does keep a computer record of events that occurred just seconds before and after a severe collision. Vehicle speed, use of brakes, and even whether a driver had his seat belt on at the time of impact can be determined by investigators using the appropriate download equipment.
In a recent N.J. case prosecutors used this black box technology to convict a driver of a Hummer who rear-ended another vehicle while stopped at a traffic light. The black box revealed that within 5 seconds of the accident the driver was going 76 miles per hour and that at the time of impact had slowed to just 67 miles per hour.
So now the most reliable witness against a driver can be the technology in his own car.
