Drunk Driving in Another State

What are the consequences of receiving a conviction for drunk driving in another state? A New Jersey resident was convicted of DWI in the State of New York and lost his right to drive there for a period of 6 months. Once the State of New Jersey found out about this drunk driving conviction months later, his license to drive in New Jersey was suspended as well. There is a compact, or agreement, among states such as New York and New Jersey which allows for separate punishment to be taken against the same individual for the same offense. Thus the punishment for getting drunk in New York does not necessarily end at that state's border, and the second license suspension issued by New Jersey can legally occur at a much later date.
This is Robert Scirocco, Attorney at Law, Budd Lake, New Jersey, bringing you today's Law Bit.
