Gun Control Law

This is Robert Scirocco bringing you today's Law Bit.
Does a person have the right to protect himself with the use of a gun? Washington DC is notorious for its violent crime. As an ironic way to solve the problem the politicians who run the city years ago enacted a law making it illegal for Washington residents to own or use a gun to defend themselves against criminals.
So the only ones running around the city with guns… were the bad guys.
The law was recently challenged and made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Relying on the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, a majority of the Court ruled that the constitution means what it says – that people have the right to bear arms – at the very least when it comes to defending themselves and their families in their own homes. So this is now the law of the land.
The more liberal members of the Court dissented from the majority ruling contending that citizens do not have a right to possess a handgun, even in their own homes but at least for now the majority rules.
This is Robert Scirocco, Attorney at Law, Budd Lake, New Jersey, bringing you today's Law Bit.
