Megan's Law was put into effect a decade ago to protect the public from convicted sexual predators who have been released from incarceration. The law works on a tier system; the severity of the offense will determine which category the felon wil be placed in. These categories range from simply notifying the local police for lesser offenses to notifying the general public about the presence of a released convicted sexual offender in the neighborhood for the most severe offenses.
